Mary is the main character of the book Take a Good Look. She is nine years old and has a visual impairment.

Mary is a nine year old girl who is small for her age, and is thought to be younger than she really is by others. She has long straight brown hair worn loose that tangles a lot, fair skin, and large brown eyes.

Mary usually wears jeans with t shirts and Velcro shoes.
Personality[]
Mary hates her condition, but hates people (particularly her Granny) babying her because of it more. She hates the bully children who play outside on the street, but at the same time wishes she could join in their games. Like other children her age, Mary likes colouring, making scrapbooks, reading storybooks, and imagining. She also has a fondness for sweet things, particularly Coca-Cola, chocolate (Mars Bars and KitKats), and crisps.

- Mary attends a school for the blind, because of her visual impairment.
- She has lots of friends at her school, but they all live too far away for her to play with them after school.
- People could tell from looking at Mary's eyes that she couldn't see properly.
- She has had several operations on her eyes, but none of which have improved her vision.
